Children’s Book Award 2019 Top Ten Announcement

by Kate Poels (CBA Co-organiser)

It is our absolute pleasure to be able to share this year’s FCBG Children’s Book Award Top 10 titles.

At the CBA we pride ourselves on being the only national children’s book award voted for entirely by the people the books were written for – the children!

Over the course of a year we gather votes from 12 groups around the country.  Each group is made up of schools, book groups, libraries and families and they are tasked with reading around 750 newly published books and giving us their opinions.  The only rule to the voting is that each vote cast must be made by someone 18 years or younger.

The children grade the books on an A-E scale and every single one of those votes gets put into a huge number cruncher.  What comes out the other end is a carefully graded scale of how popular each book was.

Then it is over to the CBA team to go through the findings and finalise a list of the Top 50 Picks of the Year as well as the all important top 10 titles.

The books the children voted for this year are (drumroll please…..)

MIXED Written and illustrated by Arree Chung

THE LAST CHIP Written and illustrated by Duncan Beedie

I think you’ll agree that the children have done a fantastic job and have chosen some really fabulous books as their top picks.

If you are aged 18 or under, or you know someone who is, and you’d like to get involved in the voting then we’d love to have you on board.  You will need to read all the books in the category you’re interested in first.  To get your hands on a set at a discounted price visit our fantastic sponsor Book Life.

Once you’ve read the books, we are asking children to help decide which of our shortlisted books come out on top and deserve to win the category prizes as well as the overall FCBG Children’s Book Award.  Details of how you can vote can be found on

We are also offering tickets for a lucky voter and accompanying adult to join us in London on 8th June at the awards ceremony, kindly sponsored by the wonderful folk at Book Life.  If you are the winning voter you will have the chance to meet most of our shortlisted authors and illustrators as well as enjoying a delicious lunch and the ceremony itself, hosted by none other than superstar illustrator, hat wearer and all round ray of sunshine Sarah McIntyre.

To find out more about the brilliant titles on our top 10 this year then follow us on Twitter @CBAcoordinator and keep an eye on the CBA website for news of our blog tour.  To be the first to find out about our winners, keep your eyes peeled on 8th June as we will be tweeting the news as it is revealed!  You can join in on Twitter too by sharing pictures of you reading or voting for the books using the hashtag #FCBGCBA19
