Hot on the heels from his appearance at our Festival of Children’s Literature, Michael Morpurgo will be appearing in London as part of a unique event.
On Sunday 10th of November at 5pm, The National Theatre will host a specially-devised evening of readings, art and music to mark Remembrance Sunday, on the New London Theatre stage in London’s West End.
Anthems for Peace will be a unique two-part production, celebrating two of Michael Morpurgo’s powerful stories: War Horse and The Best Christmas Present in the World.
The first half of the evening will showcase Olivier Award-winning designer Rae Smith’s talents as she explains how designs for the internationally-acclaimed production of War Horse were originally created, during a live demonstration of her work. Smith will be joined by BAFTA Award-winning actress Virginia McKenna and the former Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo, reading extracts from his best-selling novel of the same name and sharing personal insights into the production’s evolution from page to stage, and on to international success.
For the second act, Morpurgo will read from his short-story The Best Christmas Present in the World, accompanied by Virginia McKenna and the six-piece a capella group Voices at the Door (including Coope, Boyes and Simpson, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes), singing Christmas carols from Britain, France and Flanders.
