National Poetry Day- a guest blog from Nick Sharratt

I’m very excited to have my first collection of poems coming out and delighted that David Fickling Books are publishing it. David has been hugely important in my career: he gave me my first ever picture book to illustrate (Noisy Poems from OUP, which is still in print), he brought me together with Jacqueline Wilson and he encouraged me to create my own picture books, starting with a personal favourite, Don’t Put Your Finger in the Jelly, Nelly! (Scholastic).

I hope that readers will enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed working on it. My starting point was simply to choose characters that I knew I’d relish illustrating: vikings, a pirate, a mermaid… I then set myself the job of writing funny poems for them all.

I really loved the challenge though it took me a fair while, with each poem going through numerous versions (especially the title poem), before I arrived at my final selection.

The illustrations, on the other hand, were pretty much spontaneous and I’d like to think they reflect the enormous fun I had drawing them.

Nick Sharratt’s first ever collection of poetry, Vikings in the Supermarket, is out now from David Fickling Books.
