The Northamptonshire Children’s Book Group set up in the summer of 2018 by a group of enthusiastic librarians, teachers, parents and a children’s book illustrator, with the overall aim of bringing youngsters and books together. We are passionate about enthusing the love of books from picture books to Young Adult titles and thereby nurturing reading through our activities and events.
We are planning exciting events for 2019 including a Bookswap where youngsters can swap their old books for new. We will arrange for authors and illustrators to visit schools and libraries, organise reading groups for all ages, hold family book themed events with storytelling and craft activities, all with the aim of bringing children and books together!
NCBG will also take part in other FCBG national initiatives such as National Share a Story Month in May and National Non Fiction November when we will encourage our members to get involved and join in the activities.
There will also be the opportunity for members to vote in the FCBG Children’s Book Award which is the only book award where the books are tested and voted for entirely by the youngsters.
NCBG membership comes with a range of benefits; three copies a year of the Carousel Guide Magazine, which includes children’s book reviews, articles about authors and illustrators and information about children’s book events. You will also receive the FCBG newsletter and copies of the latest FCBG booklists as well as the FCBG Pick of the Year leaflet, discounts on local NCBG events and tickets for the yearly Federation Conference, plus member schools get priority as a venue for author/illustrator events.
We will make sure you have early notification of our events which we will let you know about in our monthly newsletter.
Membership costs £15 a year for an individual and £25 a year for schools, libraries or groups.
We do hope you will join our group and we look forward to welcoming you!

Kids Book Fest – 30th March 2019
We held our launch event, a family book festival, at the beautiful, historic Delapre Abbey in March. This was a great day, and a really successful way to kick-start our group’s activities. In the morning David Barrow, award-winning local picturebook author/illustrator, held a workshop for younger readers, who all enjoyed learning how to create their own picturebook characters. We also held a live-voting session for the Children’s Book Awards in which Sarah Stuffins from FCBG shared the stories and children voted for their favourites. In the afternoon, Chris Priestley, award-winning author of the Tales of Terror series, held an author talk and signing for some very excited young adult fans. Finally, we concluded the day with a panel discussion with Celia Rees, internationally acclaimed author of seventeen books for young adults, including the award-winning Witch Child and Lauren James, Carnegie-nominated young adult author.
Travelling Tales – Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum – 29th May 2019
In celebration of National Share a Story Month we held a free event at Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum, where we enjoyed sharing stories on the Travelling Tales theme, junk modelling our own boats and having a picnic with FedTed.
Book Swap – 12th June 2019
We held a really successful book swap at one of our member primary schools. Atfter school, children brought in their unwanted books from home to exchange for a paperback or hardback. Lots of happy children left with new reads for bedtime that night.
Pirate Storytelling – Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum – 17th August 2019
We shared pirate themed stories as part of Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum’s pirate themed family fun weekend.
Delapre Abbey Village Show – 8th September 2019
We enjoyed holding a stall at the Delapre Abbey Village Show, where we offered a book tombola, face-painting and storytelling.
Chris Riddell at The Core, Corby – 23rd September 2019
We were very excited to host former Children’s Laureate, Observer political cartoonist and award-winning author and illustrator, Chris Riddell for the day. In the afternoon, Chris did an author talk with live illustration, all about his new book, Guardians of Magic, at one of our member schools. In the evening, we were treated to the wonderful spectacle of Chris live illustrating whilst poems from his new anthology, Poems to Fall In Love With, were performed. Chris also signed books after both events, spending time with each and every person who queued to meet him and have their books signed.
