Splash by Claire Cashmore- Q&A
Claire Cashmore is widely known for her MBE and Paralympic Gold Medal. Now she shares her story in a picture book and we were given the great opportunity to ask her a few questions. Read on below for a bit more insight into Splash.
You have written a wonderful story and a powerful author’s note. Was it difficult to tell your own story or did it seem entirely natural?
Thank-you very much. I was very lucky to have Emily Lamm (editor at Farshore) to guide and support me through the whole process of writing my first book. She was very patient and encouraging as it was a huge step outside my comfort zone.
There is such a movement towards inclusive, diverse and representative books. Do you have any books you would recommend to young readers?
It’s brilliant to see a shift towards more inclusive books, to see change we need to be challenging the status quo. The more books that normalise difference the more we will see a shift in perception and getting rid of age old misconceptions.
For young readers, I’d recommend Cerrie Burnell’s picture book Mermaid. James Catchpole’s What Happened to You? And Emma Dodd’s Happy to Be Me are also great!
What has the reaction to your first picture book been?
If I am completely honest, I was really nervous before the publication date that nobody would like it but the positive feedback has blown me away. Messages such as ‘Oh look she has a little arm too’ have melted my heart, as this was the main inspiration for writing Splash, for people with a disability to see someone like them in literature. Lots of people have commented on the beautiful illustrations by Sharon Davey, which I think really made the book.
Your sisters feature heavily in this story and you seem to have had a close bond- is it still close?
100 percent, I am incredibly lucky to have two really supportive sisters (and the best parents) who I am very close to. Unfortunately we live quite far apart so I don’t get too see them as much as I would like.
What is the overriding message you want children to take away from your book?
Step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself. When it doesn’t go to plan, don’t give up; ‘what you can’t do today, you will conquer tomorrow.’
Are you currently training for upcoming events? How much time do you spend training?
I am currently waiting for official selection for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. I am a full time athlete so I spend most of my day eating, sleeping and training! I train for 20-25 hours a week across swim, bike, run and gym.
Are there any other ideas for picture books swimming in your mind?
Yes, I have definitely got the writing bug and I have got a few ideas that I would like to explore more so watch this space!
Thank you Claire, for answering our questions! We look forward to seeing what you write next!
