Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings are the two authors of Zenith, a New York Times bestselling ebook that’s now in print and published by HarperCollins. Sasha is one of the world’s biggest ‘booktubers’ on her channel A Book Utopia. She wrote Zenith with established YA author, Lindsay Cummings. Below, they explore what it means to write female driven science fiction:
It’s hard to believe I’m labeled as a “Science Fiction” author. I’ve been a hugely loyal fan of all things scifi since I was younger, but I never thought I’d be able to accomplish tackling a book on as grand a scope as Zenith. But with the book hitting shelves so soon, it’s finally happened! And it’s a dream come true.
I’ll never forget the first time I picked up a scifi book. That first book was A Wrinkle In Time, and after reading it, I thought to myself, “Wow! This is science fiction? Now this is a genre I want to get lost in!” I may have also been the only person in my middle school English class that actually enjoyed reading Frankenstein. That quickly lead to me finding Star Wars as a young girl. I immediately fell for the larger-than-life storyline, the diversity of characters, that constant tug between darkness and light. Later on, my dad introduced me to Blade Runner and Firefly and Tron, and I fell in love with scifi all over again. I could go on and on about the fandoms I’m a part of (I’ve worn my hair in Rey buns on and off for the past two years, waiting for the latest Star Wars installment), but I just want to say this:
Zenith is a book that’s reminiscent of classic scifi films and books, but I hope it bridges the gap between now and then, bringing in new readers that may be reluctant to the genre. I hope it’s one of those books, that will lead readers to pick up other scifi stories and fall in love with the genre in the way that A Wrinkle in Time did for me. We had an absolute blast writing the characters, introducing new alien creatures, unfolding entire worlds.
But we also focused on the themes that I love so much about science fiction: it’s about rebels rising up. It’s about the epic clash between darkness and light. And it’s about exploring the wide, wide expanse of outer space…and looking super super cool in your spaceship while doing it.
