Get Reluctant Readers Raring To Go – Ria Grover

Reading is a relatively simple pastime. But, in today’s digital world, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to encourage children to swap their console for a book.

Those of us that enjoy reading, recognise it’s a pleasure that can be enjoyed wherever you are. A great book has the power to be completely immersive. We’ve all thought that fatal line…just one more chapter! And before you know it, it’s the early hours!

A love of reading is a gift that our children may carry with them throughout their lifetime. Most people discover a love of books in childhood, so if you have a reluctant reader, it can be incredibly difficult and frustrating for both parents and kids when it comes to story time.

As a mum of two myself, it is worrying to see headlines highlighting that year 1 pupils have fallen further behind in reading because of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to never having experienced a ‘normal’ year at school.

I’ve always loved books and to help encourage my own children to love books we would often re-enact the stories we read – to help bring the characters and adventures off the page and into our home.

Inspired, I’ve developed a new series of interactive read and play boxes to help parents encourage their reluctant readers to enjoy books.

Max and Ivy Read & Play boxes offer kids (and their parents) a story book and an activity or game to give little ones the chance to explore the world of magic, sports and spending, saving and sharing.

I also wanted to take the chore out of reading. For more reluctant readers who may prefer more physical activity, reading is not just about imagination or looking at pictures and our games and activities make it practical, physical and relatable. They’re multi-use and help make reading fun, for kids and parents.

And for those already in love with reading, it’s a way to get even more out of the books and see mental and physical development happening in real time, by taking books and turning imagination into reality.

As children learn through imitation, the read and play boxes offer children the chance to copy the characters of Max and Ivy, through a series of activities.

The switch to home learning had a negative effect on the literacy levels of 90% of primary school children across the UK. Like all parents I am delighted to have my children back in school, but I know when something feels like hard work…it’s unlikely that child or parent will willingly do that.

Making reading part of a game is much more likely to encourage little ones to see the pleasure in the activity, and parents more likely to choose it. It’s a win-win. As a busy parent you’re spending quality time together, helping with development and having fun.

Each box retails at £19.99 and is aimed at children 3+. They are available from www.enjoywithmaxandivy.com with free delivery or coming soon to amazon.co.uk.

Example Blurb

Every day is fun day when Max and Ivy visit Grandma and Grandpa. Today it’s all about – sports day! Max and Ivy must compete and race against each other to named the…WINNER of sports day. But, who will win? And can Max and Ivy both learn to be winners?

Play and imitate Max and Ivy with your very own sports day kit!
