This Libraries Week, Simon & Schuster Children’s Books and Peters are partnering on a series of outreach initiatives to bring a love to reading to all schools regardless of their economic background.
Each year Libraries Week (3rd – 9th October 2022) celebrates the central role that libraries play in supporting reading and life-long learning, and school libraries are vital for pupils’ learning as well as creating a reading for pleasure culture amongst pupils. However, with one in four schools in disadvantaged areas not having a library space, along with a number of other challenges facing reading for pleasure in schools, this initiative from Peters and Simon & Schuster seeks to support schools that do not have a substantial budget for books or author visits.
A central initiative of the partnership is a competition to offer free author events to schools. Twelve Simon & Schuster authors and illustrators – including award-winning Steven Butler, bestselling adventuring author Abi Elphinstone and Skandar and the Unicorn Thief debut A.F Steadman – will be offering free events to school libraries during Libraries Week.
The full list of authors offering free events:
- Steven Butler (The Nothing To See Here Hotel, Spooked: The Theatre Ghosts)
- Abi Elphinstone (Rumblestar, Jungledrop)
- Stewart Foster (Can You Feel the Noise, The Bubble Boy, Check Mates)
