National Non-Fiction November Competition Details
This year for National Non-Fiction November our theme is Past Puzzles and Timeless Treasures! Our booklist features curious objects, books about historical places, people, and artefacts. We have lots of activities that you can be doing to celebrate non-fiction with children – do take a look at the activity booklet on the National non-fiction November page.
The competition for the year is to create a piece of work that is about a historical event, or something about the history of their local area. It can be about your favourite time period (such as Romans, Greeks, Aztecs, Vikings, Stone Age – there are so many to choose from!). It could be about a historical event that happened in your local area – this is where your local history museums will come in handy! If the child entering the competition is a huge fan of a historical figure that inspires them, they can make a project on them. For example, my favourite as a child was Mary Anning (who doesn’t love dinosaurs?), but they can be on any historical figure. There have been so many change-makers and inspirational people in the past, so there are lots to choose from!
The entry can be presented in any form you like – a poster, booklet, art piece. The more creative, the better! Each piece will have a maximum word limit for each age group. In the 5-7 age bracket it is 50 words – either used across the poster or in an accompanying explanation of the artwork. The 8-10 age category is maximum of 100 words, and the 11-16 age category is maximum 200 words. The accompanying words, if the entry is an art piece, can be explaining how the child made the entry, what they learnt about the subject matter of the work they created.

Things to Remember
- You must include the entry form when sending your competition entry (this can be found on our website, under National non-fiction November). There is an individual entry form and a class entry form for schools/multiple entries from a FCBG Book Group. Any entries received without the form will not be included in the judging process! We need to know who made the work!
- Make sure you are entering the correct age bracket – the prizes are age appropriate!
- If the piece you are submitting is a bit too large to fit in the post, please do send photos to nnfn@fcbg.org.uk with an entry form, along with a word document which includes the description.
- Please note – we will not be able to return any entries once they have been sent. Make sure you have taken copies of them if you want to.
All entries must be received by 6th December 2025. Anything received after this date will not be considered.
If you have any questions, please to email nnfn@fcbg.org.uk
I am really looking forward to seeing all the wonderful entries!
Jasmine
