Adventuremice: a Feast of Stories
by Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre
Adventuremice love adventure… but they also love FOOD! Biscuits, chocolate, cheese, toasted breadcrumbs… Some of their adventures are ALL about food!
In the third book, Adventuremice: Mice on the Ice, they have to travel to the mainland and sneak past a frightening cat to get treats for the mid-winter Frost Fair. Look carefully at the illustration and you can see what they brought back!
And here’s a picture of them telling the story of their adventures when they get home, complete with nibbles!
Food in stories makes a good way to get characters together. Most of our stories end with all the Adventuremice gathered around a table or picnic blanket, enjoying a tasty feast or a big plate of treats and looking forward to their next adventure. We have fun working out the menus!
It’s nice to write stories about things you like. Try making a list or drawing a picture of all your favourite foods, or all your main character’s favourite foods. They might be the same, or they might be completely different, sometimes hilariously! Perhaps your character loves eating disgusting things, or things that are so hard to get hold of that their quest for that food becomes the story itself. Sometimes the names of foods might help you think up place names, or names for your characters! Cheeses have great names: Stilton, Brie, Camembert, Cheddar, Gorgonzola, Stinking Bishop, Cornish Yarg, Halloumi… Look at all the different sorts of cheeses in this painting.
If you look at the map in the back of the books, you’ll spot a few foodie place names, such as Nibbleton and the Wedge o’Cheddar. In the second book, Adventuremice: Mermouse Mystery, we were inspired by cheese to name the queen of the mermice ‘Queen Frangipani Camembert de Mer the 44th’.
So when you’re writing a story, don’t forget to let your characters eat! Have fun imagining the delicious flavours and scents of their favourite treats. If you’re stuck for an idea, think of your favourite food and write about that!
Love and cheese from the Adventuremice! xx
