Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr by Sara Khan
We have a delightful blog from author Sara Khan about the inspirations for her book, Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. These books are vital for sharing insights into celebrations from cultures and religions around the UK!
I am delighted to share with you the inspiration behind my latest children’s book, ‘Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.’ As the author, I have been asked to provide insights into the book, its significance, and my personal connection to Ramadan and Eid.
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr is a magical first-hand account of a celebration and festival observed by around 1.9 billion people across the world. Opening with a story told from the perspective of a young girl called Raya, the book aims to educate and engage young readers in the beautiful traditions of Ramadan and the joyous celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The story unfolds through vibrant illustrations and a heartwarming narrative, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for young minds. The book takes readers on a journey, introducing them to the spiritual significance of Ramadan, the month of fasting, reflection, and increased devotion. This is then followed by a 16-page factivity section that includes additional information, a craft activity, recipes, and even a quiz to test children’s newfound knowledge.
As a Muslim author, it is crucial for me to contribute to diverse children’s literature that reflects the richness of our religious and cultural tapestry. For me, Ramadan and Eid hold a special place in my heart. It is a time of self-reflection, increased empathy, and strengthened connections with God, family and community. The book aims to convey these values, emphasizing the importance of compassion, gratitude, and the joy of sharing with others during this sacred month.
One of my favourite aspects of writing this book was the opportunity to showcase our own family traditions providing an intimate narrative that mirrors the traditions we have embraced as a family during the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Sharing the excitement of moon sightings, the receiving of Eid gifts, and the joy of festive meals for example, the book seeks to create a bridge of understanding for readers of all backgrounds. In a world that thrives on diversity, it is essential to foster an appreciation for different cultures and traditions from an early age and as a parent, I understand the importance of representation in literature. ‘Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr’ not only aims to educate young readers about Islamic traditions but also to instil a sense of pride and belonging in children who may share the same cultural background. It serves as a mirror for them to see themselves reflected positively in the world of storytelling.
‘Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr’ is not just a book; it is a celebration of diversity, a tribute to the spirit of Ramadan, and an invitation to share in the joy of Eid. I hope this book finds its way into the hands of many children, fostering understanding, respect, and a sense of unity among readers of all backgrounds. Happy reading, and may your hearts be filled with the warmth of Ramadan and the joy of Eid al-Fitr.
