‘A Feast of Stories‘ for 2024 was the theme and so three books were chosen for the sessions. The First of these was George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. A puppet with props was used to tell the story, with helpers from the audience. Children laughed and giggled at the funny antics of George as he made his potion for his horrid Grandma!
Next, was Pizza Pete and the Perilous Potion by Carrie Sellon, read beautifully by Mr Duff, English teacher & Head of Reading at RHS. The children acted out the part of the bully when he was changed into a pig, after eating the pizza slice with the magic potion added, with a pig mask and an emoji poop cushion! Kids howled with laughter as their peers supported the story.
The final part of the session was to make a bubbling potion using white vinegar, baking soda and food colouring. Colourful volcanic explosions of foam were created by the children, to embed the idea of potion making. This led nicely to creating their own potion designs, for the FCBG competition. Entries were to be sent off for judging by the author Carrie Sellon herself. The children had such wonderful ideas for ingredients and what the potions were to be used for.
We had so much fun during the sessions, we were unable to read the third book, A Mystery at the Incredible Hotel by Kate Davies & Isabelle Follath: when a top-secret recipe is stolen from The Incredible Hotel, can Matilda the bellhop – a budding detective – solve the mystery and save the day? The book was shared and recommended to the year 5 children, who will no doubt read it at a later date with their teachers.
Both schools sent lovely feedback from the parents and carers of the Year 5 children, which was just great! Reading is such an important skill and is valued by the DCBG and staff at Ridgewood High School. It was an honour to be part of NSSM, long may it continue!
