50 Books from Holly Webb
We are so pleased to share a Q&A with Holly Webb as she celebrates 50 animal stories!!! What a fantastic achievement and we know how much these stories are loved!
How does it feel to have 50 books being read, enjoyed and loved by children around the world?
Amazing – and unexpected. It’s so exciting to have messages from readers in different countries, it’s a privilege.
Did you ever dare to dream that you would have 50 books published successfully?
No! When I wrote my first book I was still working as an editor – I printed a copy out and left it on a colleague’s chair with a note, as I wasn’t brave enough to admit that I’d written a book…
Do you have a favourite age group to write for?
I love the younger age group – often I get messages saying that my Animal Stories are the first chapter books that a child has read by themselves, and that feels incredibly special. I grew up loving books so much, it’s brilliant to be part of someone’s journey to becoming a reader.
Do you find writing for different ages a challenge or does it come easily?
I really like it. It’s a change of pace, and it’s very useful if I’m stuck. Working on something very different often unsticks me!
What do you think the secret to your success is?
A huge amount of luck to start with – I was in the right place at the right time! But I love writing about animals, and hopefully that shows through. I am also a big, big fan of real life animal rescue stories – they make me cry! I really am writing what I love. (I have a feeling that if I was reading this interview I might be rolling my eyes about now, sorry…!)
Do you have a special writing space?
Yes, it was originally half of our garage. Now it’s a tiny room with a lot of bookshelves and a very comfy armchair.
What is your ideal writing snack?
Anything that goes well with coffee!
